At harvest time, evenings are filled with its aroma… and the sunset is coloured by the newly cut flowers strewn over the fields. The humble alembics installed near the reservoirs glow with red flames into the night. Lavender is so connected to Provence that often farmers don’t realise that it was introduced during the Roman invasion which gave this region the designation of ‘Provincia Romana’ from which its name derives. As a perfumer, I love the strength of these landscapes and the beauty of the lavender fields where flocks of blue butterfly’s float in the air. To bring this scene to life, I composed Lavande Romaine a joyful fragrance that dances and sings a summer tune.

Stercus is an olfactory reference to the dung and comes from Latin meaning ‘feces’. For Alessandro, the dung is an essential part of the circle of life – it is an organic fertilizer for the soil, it’s natural and always true Feces is a link in between the end and the beginning of an infinite circle of life, it is an outcome processed by the body and a fertilizer to start a new life of a plant. Dung is something very true and natural. A true smell of life and equality. All differences end with excertion of something universal. All organisms produce waste, and all human beings, even the most noble ones, even the royals do shit. During the process we’re all the same and we are what we eat. Defecation is an essential part of body functioning and an initial health indicator – doctors analyze stool to understand the health of the gut and digestion in general. And we should trust our gut feeling in general.

At dawn, when the darkness begins to fade with the incipient light and the warmth of the sun gains intensity, the silhouette of the wild rose is blurred against the light. The dew that wets its petals evaporates in the heat of the sun’s rays and creates an aura around it that moves capriciously in the morning breeze. The curiosity inherent in my profession pushes me to approach and savor this queen just when she wakes up and her scent is unique. My instinct guides me to the moment when the queen’s heart is uncovered to enter, between dew and gloom, to steal her reason for being.

My olfactory language is largely based on essences extracted from wood. Of these the most rare and solemn is Indian agarwood —also known as oud, its Arabic name. A unique, powerful and almost magical scent with a great tradition in Arab culture. Given my penchant from the culture of Al-Andalus, I decided I should compose my own interpretation of this unique ingredient with a Western Mediterranean twist using also leather and musk.
